177A Circle of Karl Wilhelm Lachnit (1899 - 1962) German,
Enamel on copper,
'Judgement of Solomon ',
Signed ' K.L. 32 ' lower right,
3 3/4 x 3 1/8".
Lachnit is an important Dresden Artist who was closely connected to Otto Dix and Otto Griebel ( to name a few) as well as co-founder of the New Objectivity Group with Hans Grundig , Dix and Fritz Skade.
Much of Lachnit's work was designated ' Degenerate Art ' by the Nazis and was confiscated. It is believed to have been destroyed in the Dresden fire bombing as well as much of the then surviving art.
Lachnit signed his works as 'K.L., W.L., Wilhelm Lachnit and Karl Wilhelm Lachnit and are usually dated, as this is.
This has come from 'The Wilhelm Sternfeld Archive ' . Sternfeld was forced to leave Germany just as the Nazis were coming to power in 1933.
The Militaristic depiction of the three figures in the background pose many questions unsurprisingly given the context of the dying months of the Weimar Republic !
