Details of Lot 1053
Lieutenant-General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, OM, GCMG, GCVO, KCB, DL
A British South Africa Company telegraph, sent by Baden Powell (from his armoured train) to Captain Kenneth McLaren (recouperating after his wounding), reading: '21st Mafeking hope you are flourishing and well all goes well here, what is your home news.' Postmarked Macloutsie '99.

Together with a hand-written, signed note from Baden Powell to McLaren, reading: 'Dear Boy, Bearer of this is the bearer that my bearer has sent for to be your bearer - you can't have the truth barer than that, if you have a whole barrel-ful of it - (illegible) RSSBP'

In 1989 the biographer Tim Jeal published an exhaustive biography of Baden Powell, wherein he closely scrutinised the relationship between 'Bloater' (BP) and 'Boy' (McLaren.) Whilst Jeal stopped short of concluding that the relationship became romantic, his work reveals an extraordinarily close bond between the two officers which, had it been made public, may have scandalised erstwhile social attitudes. BP was godfather to McLaren's daughter Eileen, however, when McLaren's first wife Leila died and he remarried Ethel Wilson (his nurse) against BP's wishes, relations ceased.
