Major Kenneth McLaren DSO (1860-1924)
Four scrapbooks, compiled by the Major's first wife Leila Evelyn Landon and relating to the events of the Second Boer War (1899-1902), bearing the signatures of Robert Baden Powell, Herbert Plumer and Lord Roberts, together with several of McLaren's fellow officers.
The volumes house a large collection of Boer War press clippings (prevalently, newspaper articles and photographs from periodicals.) Telegraphs from Baden Powell to McLaren and from Lord Roberts to Baden Powell (signed, with news of the relief of Mafeking.) Several invitations to functions, including invitation from Messrs Lamport & Holt to the trail of their new Mail and Passenger Steamer Vasari, ( polo programmes, two formal dinners with the 'Buckingham Detachment Imperial Yeomanry and Rifle Volunteers' in which McLaren's brother-in-law served.) Together with hand-drawn maps, and X-ray of McLaren's wounded leg.
One volume includes numerous sepia photographs of McLaren's fellow officers in South Africa during the Boer war, including a portrait of Robert Baden Powell - titled 'Major General BP at Mafeking May 1900'
