Victorian South African Historical Photograph Album : Thought to have once belonged to Major ( later Major-General Sir) John Dartnell ( or close family member) shows the early photographs of the forming of the Natal Mounted Police ( NMP) later Natal Police , in 1874 , a para-military force and the first line of defence in the Colony of Natal, South Africa .
Black and white photographs show the original headquarters , Native Swazi beehive Huts, nurses, Steam ship arriving and departing , figures of Boer War ( many wearing hats ),one Indian and 6 Native figures holding Knobkerries , Staffs or Sjamboks and Assegai ( light spear or javelin made of wood and pointed with iron or fire-hardened tip ) , figure in uniform with horse , posed photographs of Police Officers and uniformed natives , Tents , tribal chief ( Xhosa ?), 4 figures in traditional Tribal Dress , Royal visit Durban street scenes , and many personal photographs showing Dartnell taking tea , Sons on holiday , and in the Bush , view of river , landscapes , beach , interior of Swazi Beehive Hut showing Dartnell and wife as pictures on wall , etc. ,etc.( approximately 63 photographs , all approximately 4 3/4 x 6 1/2" )
