This item was owned and used by Dr Joseph Wishart Shield who was an ophthalmic surgeon for the South West region of England after World War II, During the war he served as a Surgeon Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, first in HMS Grafton which was torpedoed at Dunkirk and during which action he was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for the role he played in rescuing injured troops and ship's personnel. He was subsequently on HMS Sheffield during the time of its service with 'H' force in the Mediterranean and on Arctic convoys to Russia during which time the Sheffield was involved in the sinking of the Bismarck.
